Since its inaugural year, the Bissell ’33 Tournament hosted by The Hill has grown to attract some of the premier prep school wrestling teams in the region. The 2020 tournament was no exception, drawing a Malvern Prep team that is ranked ninth nationally as well as top-20 prep programs Germantown Academy, Green Farms Academy, and Northfield Mount Hermon.
When the final bout concluded, Hill had crowned three individual champions and earned a second-place finish in the 14-team field, Hill’s highest finish at the event since 2013.
Hill fared particularly well in the lower weights, winning 113, 126, and 138 and finishing runner-up at 106. For the second-consecutive season, Jake Craig ’22 took gold in his weight class in the Bissell Tournament, this year winning the 113-pound class. Newcomer Kelvin Griffin ’22 pinned all three of his opponents to win 126, and Sam Beckett ’22 claimed the 138-pound title without surrendering a single point on the day. Kade Davidheiser ’23 reached the final of 106 before falling to Malvern Prep’s Tommy Link. Joey Asterino ’23 had a good day at 120, finishing 5-1 overall with his only loss coming to a wrestler who is committed to Cornell University.
In the upper weights, Hill was led by Gernard Finney ’20, who finished second at 182 by virtue of a 3-1 record on the day in a round-robin bracket. Post-graduate Mack Daniels also reached the podium for Hill, finishing sixth at 160.
While the team was competing in the Bissell Tournament, the first installment of the National Prep Rankings were released for each individual weight class. Five Hill wrestlers appear on the list:
- Davidheiser is fifth at 106
- Craig is third at 113
- Griffin is sixth at 126
- Beckett fourth at 145, the class in which he competed prior to Saturday
- Derek Schmaeling ’21 is tenth at 195
Rankings will be updated on the National Prep website periodically leading up to the National Prep Tournament, which will take place on February 21-22 at Lehigh University.
