On September 21, 2025, Hill Boys’ Water Polo defeated the Landon School, 17-9, marking Head Coach Doug Jones’ 250th career victory. He was recognized for this accomplishment during seated lunch on September 16, 2026. Now in his 21st season leading the program, Coach Jones has continued to add to the milestone and currently sits at 258 career wins.
Reaching 250 victories is a reflection of more than two decades of dedication to Hill Boys’ Water Polo. “Behind the wins are countless practices and swim sets, early and late meals in the dining hall, van rides, weekends in Annapolis and New England, and hours spent in Cunningham Pool. Throughout it all, Coach Jones has worked not only to develop successful water polo players, but also to build a program centered around character, commitment, and integrity,” said Associate Athletic Director Elle O’Brien.
Jones’ commitment to Hill students also extends well beyond Cunningham Pool. In addition to leading the Boys’ Water Polo program, Coach Jones is an Athey Family Master Teacher. Notably, he teaches Eudaimonia, a signature part of the Hill student experience centered on well-being and personal development. Coach Jones impact beyond the pool is echoed by the athletes who continue to play for Jones today.
“Having Coach Jones as a water polo coach for the past four years has been amazing,” Captain Brock Larkin ’27 remarked. “He is a hardworking person and always finds the best attributes in a person. Over the four years I’ve known him, I’ve learned so much about water polo and even more about myself. Thank you, Coach.”
“Coach Jones has the highest dedication to both the Hill Boys’ Water Polo program and the athletes who comprise it,” Captain Bodie Lanning ’28 said. “Coach is dedicated to winning. But even more than that, he wants to see us grow from boys into men. That is what makes Coach Jones so special. Thank you for everything, Coach.”
Now more than 250 victories into his Hill career, Jones’ impact is measured not only by the wins accumulated over 21 seasons, but by the generations of Hill water polo players he has coached along the way.
