Character in Practice

Hill's motto, 'Whatsoever things are true,' is lived daily through formal, structured commitments to character, well-being, leadership, and civic responsibility alongside academic growth.

Advisory: Advisories are small faculty-student groups of five to seven students that meet weekly and typically remain together for a student’s entire time at Hill. The advisory is the structural expression of the School’s belief that every student deserves a trusted adult who knows them well and holds them to the highest standard of personal responsibility.

The Honor Code: The Honor Code is a student-written and student-governed code, upheld through the Honor Council, that calls every member of the Hill community to uphold the principles of truth, honor, and integrity in all intellectual, co-curricular, and social pursuits.

Boarding Requirement (One Year for Day Students):To be fully immersed in the residential life that teaches the balance of independence and interdependence at the heart of a Hill education, day students are required to board for at least one year.

Eudemonia (Hill’s Well-Being Program): A required well-being program grounded in Aristotle’s concept of human flourishing develops resilience, empathy, conflict management, and decision-making across a student’s Hill career. The program is rooted in Hill’s belief that well-being is a core educational commitment.

Cleveland Leadership Center (Endowed Leadership Program): The endowed center prepares students who hold leadership positions at Hill to lead with the self-awareness, ethical grounding, and practical skill that genuine leadership demands. Through speakers, seminars, and structured training, the Cleveland Leadership Center makes the development of leadership an explicit and ongoing commitment.

The Prefect Program: Prefects are trained student residential leaders who carry genuine responsibility for the well-being, standards, and daily life of their dormitory communities.

Student Philanthropy Council: The Student Philanthropy Council is an endowed program in which students evaluate proposals, deliberate as a body, and direct $30,000 in annual grants to nonprofits serving the Pottstown community.

Hill Connections: The Hill Connections Program links current students with alumni who share their career interests, opening doors to mentorship, summer opportunities, and internships. Drawing on one of the most loyal alumni networks in secondary education, the program turns the lifelong Hill bond into practical guidance for the years after graduation.

Hobart’s Run & Community Service: Through the School’s own 501(c)(3) neighborhood revitalization initiative, Hill’s Hobart’s Run and Community Service programs connect students to sustained, meaningful civic work in Pottstown. Students engage not as visitors but as neighbors in the community they have called home for more than 175 years.
