Fall College Counseling Webinars

The College Counseling Office will be hosting webinars for students and parents throughout the Autumn Session. The webinars will be held via Zoom from 7 to 8 p.m. EDT on the dates listed below.

September 2020:

September 2:  Common Application nuts and bolts: Mrs. Allain and Mrs. Johnson will guide sixth formers in completing the common application – going over and answering questions regarding the primary and supplement sections. This webinar is for students only.

September 7:  What questions do you have? Mrs. Deitrich and Mr. Murphy host a session for sixth form parents, discussing the months ahead in the college process.

September 16, 23, 27:  College Fairs for fifth and sixth form students only

September 30: Best ways to approach college supplement essays with Mrs. Deitrich, Mrs. Allain, and guest panelists from the college admissions world. Joining us are Katie Quill Chaszczewski from the University of Chicago, Lowell Tillet from Wake Forest, and Debra Johns from Yale. For sixth form students only.

October 2020:

October 4:  College Fair for fifth and sixth form students only

October  7:  How important are college admissions interviews? Ms. Hoyt and Mrs. Toomey ask Jennifer Castro from Lehigh University, Jonathan Gowin from Trinity College, and Jake Deitrich from Syracuse University how to prepare for those interviews.

October 9:  College Admission in the Era of Covid 19. Author, motivational speaker and former dean of admissions Peter Van Buskirk recently completed interviews with 20 deans of admission regarding their institutional responses to the health and economic crises, present and anticipated. This presentation reflects observations from these conversations. For fifth form students and parents. Zoom link to be provided at a later date. 

October 14:  Financial aid materials, the FAFSA and CSS Profile, are now available for sixth form families. The College Funding Coach, Brad Wood, is back to answer any questions sixth form parents may have. 


October 28:  The state of college admissions in the time of Covid-19 for sixth form students and parents. Mrs. Deitrich and Mrs. Toomey host the following panel from college admissions: Derek DuBose from The University of Denver, Christina Thomas from Johns Hopkins University, Kent Rinehart from Marist College, Jodi Robinson from The University of Pennsylvania, and Gil Villanueva from The University of Richmond. 

November and December 2020:

November 11:  International Students – What can you expect from the college process in the year ahead? Mrs. Deitrich and Ms. Hoyt host Cornell LeSane from Allegheny College, Jason Nevinger from The University of Rochester, and Ffiona Rees from UCLA to discuss this topic. For fifth and sixth form students and parents.

November 18:  Hill alumni trainees talk to our fifth and sixth formers about what they wished they had considered during the college admissions process, and how Hill helped them make the transition into college.

December 9:  Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities Seth Eilberg and Mr. Murphy, along with a number of college coaches and athletics liaisons from admission offices, take questions regarding the state of recruiting with so many events and high school leagues put on hold due to the pandemic.
