Wallach Family Military Scholarship

The Hill School is seeking qualified Wallach Family Military Scholarship applicants for the 2027-28 academic year. Learn more about this opportunity and our past and current Wallach Family Military Scholars below.

Marshall Wallach ’61, along with his wife, Diane, and sons, Marshall ’05, Forbes ’07, and Clark, established the Wallach Family Military Scholarship in 2016. This annual need-based scholarship can cover up to 100 percent of each student recipient’s demonstrated need and is intended for a highly qualified student who is the child of an active duty officer in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Wallach was motivated by his patriotism; by a desire to increase understanding between the civilian and military sectors of U.S. society; and by his belief that students who have been exposed to the life-broadening experience of growing up as the children of career officers will enrich the entire Hill community.

Qualifications for the Wallach Family Military Scholarship

The Scholarship may cover room, board, tuition, books, academic-related travel expenses such as those incurred for experiential learning opportunities, and other required educational costs such as computer purchases. At least one parent of each Military Scholarship student must be an active duty commissioned officer with not less than 10 years of continuous active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, or Space Force. However, the 10-year minimum can be waived if the student’s parent died in the line of duty. The student is qualified to receive the Wallach Family Military Scholarship throughout his or her years of study at The Hill if certain criteria are met annually.

The Hill School is urging alumni, parents, and friends to help spread the word about this distinctive opportunity. Community members who know military families or who have helpful contacts through the U.S. Military network are urged to share such information with Tom Eccleston IV ’87 P'19 '21, Hill’s assistant head of school for enrollment management, at teccleston@thehill.org. Tom also can answer specific questions regarding student and family qualification and selection guidelines. Additional information also appears here. The application deadline is January 31, 2026.

Logan

Logan joined The Hill community in the fall of 2026 as a fourth former. The son of a U.S. Naval officer, Logan has attended schools on both the West and East Coasts throughout his life. Logan is grateful for the supportive community that surrounds Hill. He appreciates the opportunity to shape his schedule and pursue his interests and passions. He looks forward to participating on the ice hockey and lacrosse teams, and joining The Hill News staff. One of his personal goals is to attend as many Hill events as possible and be active in life at Hill. So far, he is enjoying his French 2 and English 2 classes, as he finds them to be a good mix of challenging yet engaging.

I am so grateful to Mr. Wallach for this time at Hill and for providing me with the stability and confidence in my future and other scholars.

Evelyn Adler ’28

Evie joined The Hill community in the fall of 2025 as a fourth former. Her father, Jason, is a Colonel in the U.S. Army and serves as Fort Drum Garrison Commander in Fort Drum, N.Y. Having moved four times in the last five years, Evie and her family are grateful for the opportunity for her to attend Hill and experience its tight-knit community, something she has never experienced before in her previous schooling. She’s excited to continue the wide range of academic opportunities available to her; especially Anatomy & Physiology, Humanities, and Greek, which have been particularly rewarding. She is excited to participate in crew and ice hockey, as well as joining and leading clubs on campus. She serves as a chair on the DEI Council and affinity group leader, and is a library proctor. She considers it an honor to be part of this special community where she gets to leave her mark and pursue many leadership opportunities.

I love giving back to the community, and the ability to participate in so many clubs and activities at Hill allows us to make meaningful connections with people who enjoy the same things.

Isobel Haberland ’28

Isie joined The Hill community in the fall of 2024 as a third former. With both of her parents serving as lawyers for the U.S. Army, Isie has moved nine times in her young life. Her parents wanted Isie to have stability throughout her high school years, while also feeling challenged, and felt Hill was the perfect fit. Isie is thankful to be at Hill and for this opportunity. She has felt so welcome and encouraged by everyone. Isie has a passion for reading and writing and plans to get involved with Hill’s Book Club and join the swimming and lacrosse teams. One of Isie’s favorite classes is English, and she especially appreciates the care and attention her teacher provides, as well as the fun, engaging conversations the class enjoys around the Harkness table.

Hill envelopes everyone into a community of belonging. I love being around other students who are academically motivated and are trying to be the best person they can be.

Emma Murray '27

Emma is the younger sister of previous Wallach Scholars, Kyle ’22 and Alex ’23 Murray.  Emma’s father, Kevin, is a 1995 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and is a Colonel with the U.S. Marine Corps and currently is the director for science and technology for the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory in Quantico, VA. In Emma’s time at Hill, she finds The Hill’s tight-knit community, especially her supportive teachers who want to ensure students' success, as particularly beneficial. Beyond academics, she is an active member of Hill's community life, participating in HillTrebles, Model UN, Track and Field, Cross Country, Chorus, and many other groups and organizations across campus. Through these activities, Emma has developed lasting friendships, formed stronger leadership skills, and found opportunities to challenge herself both inside and outside the classroom. She has especially valued being part of a community that encourages you to become better than you are. She is grateful to the Wallach family for this life-changing opportunity to learn and grow and to make a positive impact on the world.

The kindness of the Wallach family has opened up a world of opportunities for me, and I will strive to make the most of this chance to learn and grow.

Saoirse Harlan ’27

Saoirse Harlan ’27 joined The Hill community as a third form student and the daughter of dual-military parents. Currently stationed at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pa., Saoirse is on her eighth move as an Army child. She is active in Hill’s Community Service program as a Fellow, is a leader in SAMH, founder of the Political Engagement Club, and is a decorated award-winning writer. Saoirse is most grateful for the friends and mentors she has encountered during her time at Hill. From her third form year roommate to her adviser, the connections made at Hill are ones she will cherish for a lifetime. She has found her academic experience to be both challenging and rewarding in the best ways and particularly enjoys how engaging her teachers make every lesson. Saoirse is immensely appreciative to the Wallach family for providing her with this incredible, life-changing opportunity that has set her up to do things she never once dreamed of. She promises that one day, she hopes to do the same for other students like her.
The feeling of finally having somewhere to call home means everything to me.
