Ben '20 | Berwick, Pa.

I love The Hill because you truly can make your own path here. I’m a legacy kid; my dad and two brothers graduated from Hill. One of my brothers was a sixth former when I arrived at Hill as a third former. I was disheartened at first, because I wanted to be able more than just “the brother” or “the son.” I wanted to be my own person and do my own thing. And that’s what I did. Quite easily. There are hundreds of possibilities here for you be the best at being you. You have the opportunity to discover and appreciate your unique differences and passions. I love the Hill because it brings out the best of you in everything around you.

Ben '20

Boarding/Day: I am a boarding student and a proud three-year member of the mighty and honorable Foster Dormitory.

Activities at Hill: I’m trapped in a vicious cycle of rowing (crew) and cross country. I am a member of the theatre tech crew, and I serve as a prefect on Foster Dormitory 2W.

Favorite Hill memory or tradition: While my voice isn’t the most angelic, one of my first memories here at Hill is singing in Chapel as a new third former. As clear as day, I remember the Chapel erupting in song when the officiant announced we would be singing Whatsoever Things Are True. It felt like the stones were going to shake out of the walls. Mr. Conrad stopped playing the organ because you couldn’t hear it anymore. The sixth formers were belting, because they knew it was the start of their last songs at Hill. I was belting because I knew it was the beginning. It was the loudest assembly of noise I’ve ever heard before, and it was a choir song. I always think of that when I sit down in those wooden pews.

Classes/teachers that have influenced you in some way: I have had Mr. Ciarolo as a teacher twice, and he is my coach for cross country and crew. From our passionate class discussions on the Greek ancients, random historical topics, current events, and Llamas with Hats to being happy and living life in general, Mr. Ciraolo constantly proves to be a knowledgeable person from whom I have learned an absurd amount. Outside the classroom, he motivates me to push past my limits in crew and has taught me a discipline that has carried into my everyday philosophy. He is an essential character in The Hill School's long list of excellence in education, and a truly fantastic person to go to in a time of need or advice. I can also say he is the only other person that can talk for a longer amount of time than me!

Fun Facts About Ben:

I consume way too much Diet Coke.

What is your favorite song to sing in the car?  Toxic by Britney Spears. No one can resist that song.

What is your favorite vacation destination?  I go to Maine in the summer with my family and do lots of prep school things, like sailing and teaching sailing and racing sailboats.

What is your favorite Dining Hall meal? I know “the sausage bowl” doesn’t really sound the most appetizing, but...

What is your go-to snack at The Grille?  Sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel, with the sausage and bagel burnt crispy, and topped with roasted red peppers, hot sauce, and spicy mustard. It’s my greatest creation. I’ve ordered it so much that Grille staff know my order by heart.

What would the title of your biography be? Something like Indiana Jones 5  just to mess with people.
