The Hill School and The Lawrenceville School celebrated their 135th year of competition this past Saturday, November 5, 2022, in New Jersey. Hill’s boys’ varsity soccer team defeated their longtime rival 3-2. However, this was more than just a rivalry win; it was a championship win.

For the fourth consecutive season, the team captured the 2022 Boys’ Soccer Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) Championship. Based on team standings in the MAPL, Hill will share this championship win The Hun School, with both teams being named Co-Champions.

“It was another great chapter in the rivalry,” said Head Coach Wyatt Fabian ’14. “Both teams came out and played hard.”

In the first half, the Blues scored first making it 1-0 and kept it going into the second half with another goal. Lawrenceville answered back with two goals tying it up 2-2 late in the second half.

“Our group prides itself in our ability to defend so this was a new feeling for us,” Coach Fabian stated.

With five minutes left in the game, captain Gavin Mpiana ’23 scored making it 3-2 Hill. At the final buzzer, Hill students stormed the field to celebrate a win against Lawrenceville and the MAPL title.

“All in all, it was a fantastic team effort against an opponent who was not going to go down lightly,” said Coach Fabian.

After a 1-0 win against Malvern Prep on November 3, the boys’ varsity soccer team is still in the race for the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) State title. They face off against The Phelps School on Tuesday, November 8 at 2:45 p.m. at The Phelps School.
