A full slate of games covered the athletics schedule on Saturday, April 6, with all but two varsity teams in action for the first full day of games this spring.  Hill teams did exceptionally well throughout the weekend, posting several victories.  Below are brief recaps of each game:

Boys’ Tennis: Hill 4 – Peddie 3
Hill won all three doubles matches to secure the pivotal doubles point in a 4-3 victory over Peddie.  Dev Sharma ’22, Eduardo Slomp ’19, and William Biggs ’22 each won their singles match, with Slomp and Biggs overcoming first set losses to win in three sets.  Hill’s doubles pairs included Sharma and Russell Marinari ’20, Slomp and Ata Basol ’21, and Colin Meng ’20 and Philippe Jin ’21.

Girls’ Lacrosse: Hill 16 – Peddie 6
In the opening MAPL game of the season, Hill jumped out to an 11-1 halftime lead and maintained a 10-goal advantage throughout the second half.  Hannah Spease ’20 had a big day in the faceoff circle, gaining 12 draw controls.  Spease also added a hat-trick, one of four Hill players with at least three goals for the game.  Tatumn Eccleston ’19 (five goals, four assists), Lindsey Coffey ’20 (four goals, three assists), and Logan Clouser ’21 (three goals) led the offensive charge along with Spease.

Boys’ Lacrosse: Hill 12 – Peddie 6
Down 3-2 after a slow first quarter, Hill dominated the final three quarters to improve to 2-0 in MAPL play.  Committing a season-low two penalties, Hill’s discipline and precise transition play helped get the team on track after the slow opening frame.  Nolan Smith ’20 led Hill with four goals and an assist, and JD Shepherd ’20 (two goals, two assists), Carter Page ’20 (hat trick), and Carter Straub ’21 (two goals) also had multi-point games.  Zach Phillips made 13 saves between the pipes.

Girls’ Golf: Hill 185 – Blair 187
In the first match of the season, Hill defeated Blair Academy by two strokes on Blair’s quirky home course that is always difficult for visiting teams to play on.  With the top-four individual scores contributing to each team’s overall score, Hill was led by Jessica Shao ’20 who carded a 42.  Captain Marina Mendez ’19 shot a 47, as did Elle Lagor ’21 in a career-best round, and Gia Seravalli ’21 rounded out the day with a 49.

Boys’ Golf: Brunswick 395, Gilman 433, Hill 452
A deep Brunswick team with four college-bound golfers was too much for Hill to handle in an 18-hole tri-match against Brunswick and Gilman, with soggy conditions making the 6700-yard track play even longer.  Billy Gussler ’21 was Hill’s low man, firing a 78 over 18 holes.  After a difficult front 9, Echo Wu ’20 shot a respectable 39 on the back 9, and Cam Miller ’19 fired a steady 84.

Crew: Blair Academy dual and Manny Flick Series
It was a busy weekend for The Hill’s crew teams.  On Saturday, the teams traveled to Paulinskill Lake in northern New Jersey to row against Blair Academy in the first dual race in program history.  The Hill boys’ won all three races against Blair to return home as 3-0 victors; Blair claimed all three of the girls’ races.  The next day, the teams’ headed to Philadelphia’s Boat House Row for the second race in the Manny Flick Series.  Hill’s teams raced extremely well.  In four girls’ races, Hill teams won their flight in two races and placed second in two races, while the boys’ Varsity “A” team finished third overall and the “B” team finished one spot behind.  The most thrilling finish of the day was in the JV 4+, where Hill edged Episcopal Academy by just .01 seconds to win their flight.
