On January 15 and 16, Hill Wrestling traveled o Council Rock High School for the 2022 Escape the Rock Tournament. Lehigh University Wrestling commit, Kelvin Griffin ’22, entered this tournament as the 6-seed, and, according to Head Coach Dave Hoffman, “turned in, unquestionably, his best performance of the year.”

Starting off the event, Griffin dominated with a 47-second pin that would lead him to battling it out with club teammate and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association medalist, Kelly Kakos of Perk Valley, and winning 7-0.

Moving up to quarterfinals was 3-seed, Jake Niffenegger of Cincinnati LaSalle who is a two-time Ohio State Finalist and nationally ranked. That didn’t stop Griffin as he took control of the match and forced a second period where he fell 3:25 in.

The next morning, Griffin kept his composure against three-time New Jersey medalist, Super 32 All-American, Fargo All-American, and UPenn commit, Alex Almeyda of St. Joe’s Regional in the semifinals. Griffin was able to take down Almeyda with a 3-0 match win. This win led Griffin to be the first-ever Hill wrestler to be a finalist in the Escape the Rock Tournament.

Griffin faced #4 Tyler Kasak of Bethlehem Catholic in the finals. Kasak is a Pennsylvania State Champion, Beast of the East Champion, Ironman Champion, and a Fargo Finalist with only two losses in his high school career. After forcing the match into a third period, Griffin fell 7-3 despite putting up a hard-fought battle.
