Baseball is one of the oldest interscholastic sports at The Hill, dating back to the 1880s. The program’s history is a source of pride amongst our current players, all of whom are well aware of it and strive to continue that excellence and write their own chapter in the program’s history book. We have a good record of players moving on to play collegiately, with several also being drafted by Major League Baseball organizations.
Baseball season at The Hill officially begins in late February, and runs through the end of May. The Hill is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL), which also includes Blair Academy, The Hun School of Princeton, Lawrenceville School, Mercersburg Academy, and Peddie School. The 22-27 game schedule includes two games against each MAPL opponent, as well as a handful of non-league games against other independent schools from the Mid-Atlantic region.
The season concludes with the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) State Tournament, comprised of that season’s 16 best independent school teams in the state. Most of our players compete in the summer for hometown, Legion, or travel teams.
The varsity baseball diamond was completely renovated in the spring of 2011 and has been upgraded in 2015 and 2019, serving as a fine home facility that rivals those of many collegiate programs. The field features spacious, enclosed dugouts; a nine-inning electronic scoreboard; a hitting tunnel and enclosed bullpen; and a permanent fence with professional dimensions. Mercer Fieldhouse contains an indoor batting cage and pitching mounds, and is spacious enough to create a regulation infield during inclement weather.
