Boys' Ice Hockey

Boys' Ice Hockey

Hill School ice hockey has been a part of New England Prep School hockey for more than 55 years. As an independent Division I prep program and associate member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), The Hill plays against some of the top talent from New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

Our varsity team typically plays 30+ games each season, and well over half of those are against NEPSAC opponents. Locally, The Hill is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League, which also includes Lawrenceville, Princeton Day School, Wyoming Seminary, The Hun School, LaSalle College High School, and Portledge School. The Blues practice and play their home games on campus at Hall/Eccleston Arena, a multi-million dollar indoor facility that holds nearly 500 spectators and features state of the art locker rooms for all players.

In addition to the varsity team, the boys’ hockey program also features a junior varsity team. The JV schedule consists of 16-18 games against a combination of JV and appropriately competitive varsity-level prep and public school teams from throughout the region. Between practices and games, the JV team typically is on the ice six days per-week throughout the season. Please contact head JV coach Andy Bessette with any questions about The Hill JV program.

Hill welcomed Georgetown Prep to campus on Friday night for a scrimmage in which the Blues were able to dress two separate groups; each group had 9 forwards and 5 defensemen and played one, 25-minute half.  Penalties were called and served but man power did not change to allow the teams to play the entire 50-minutes at 5 on 5.  In the first half, Hill's "Blue" group won 2-1 and in the second half the "Gray" group won 5-0.

The Blues got their first taste of New England action on Saturday afternoon in modified format scrimmages against Canterbury and Taft, played at Taft in a round-robin format.  All games were 25-minutes in length, and penalties were called but man power was not affected to keep the games at 5 on 5.  Hill defeated Canterbury 2-0 and fell to Taft 1-0.  In all, it was a day of tremendous competition and an invaluable experience for the team.  Next weekend, Hill will conclude preseason play with scrimmages at St. Sebastian's (Saturday at 10 AM), Nobles (Saturday at 3 PM) and Belmont Hill (Sunday at Noon).

Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Chris Bala '97 | cbala@thehill.org
After spending five seasons as an assistant coach, Chris Bala took over as the head boys’ varsity ice hockey coach in the 2013-14 season. Bala spent two years at The Hill as a student, serving as President of the Sixth Form in 1996-97. After an outstanding career at The Hill, Bala went on to play at Harvard University, where he was a four-year member of the Crimson Men’s Hockey team. The Ottawa Senators drafted Bala in the second round of the 1998 NHL draft, and he made his professional debut in 2001-02 after graduating from Harvard. During his rookie season, Bala was an AHL all-star and earned a call-up to the Senators. He retired at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, and returned to The Hill that fall as a member of the Admission Office. In addition to coaching at The Hill, Bala also has coached for the USA Hockey Mid-Atlantic District during the summer months.
