Boys Lacrosse

The Hill School boys lacrosse program seeks to provide student-athletes with support in every facet of the sport of lacrosse. Developing young talent at the junior varsity level through helping assist impact varsity players with the college recruiting process are all part of the Hill lacrosse experience. Virtually all of our varsity lacrosse players find themselves on another varsity team during the fall and winter, proving the multi-sport athlete is alive and well at The Hill School.

Admission to The Hill School:

Please go to our admission page to see where the admission office will travel throughout the fall, learn about affordabilityschedule an interview, and view our five- year college matriculation list.

Our location allows our players ample opportunity to attend fall recruiting events in the mid-Atlantic region with their club programs or individual showcases. Players have access to equipment including nets, plenty of wall space and lacrosse balls to hone basic skills independently. Also, voluntary fall and winter workouts occur twice weekly on Harry L. Price Field or our indoor facility, David H. Mercer Field House, which allows for half field practices or box lacrosse practice. Players return from spring break a few days early for pre-season practices.

Spring Season:

While in season, every minute is carefully planned to maximize the talent, character, and focus of our players. Each practice is carefully planned in order to improve basic skills, time honored and cutting-edge drills that help break down each aspect of the sport of lacrosse. Our schedule of 15-18 games includes five games against fellow Mid-Atlantic Prep League schools - Hun School, Mercersburg Academy, Blair Academy, Peddie School, and Lawrenceville School, Hill’s rival since the 1880s in what is the fifth-oldest high school rivalry in the United States – and a challenging non-league schedule. Non-league opponents include regional and national powers such as Malvern Prep, Bergen Catholic, and Culver Military Academy.  Access to our weight room with the school’s fulltime Strength and Conditioning Coach and our team film room allow us to prepare off the field as well.

College Recruitment and Placement:

The ever-evolving landscape of the recruitment process requires close guidance.  Those interested in playing at the collegiate level will receive support directly from the coaching staff, led by Coach Murphy in his role as the school’s Student-Athlete Recruiting Coordinator. Open and honest dialogue throughout the recruiting process is paramount and we push our student-athletes to find the right fit above all else.

In the past decade, more than 30 alumni have moved on to play at collegiate programs including The University of North Carolina, Colgate, Hofstra, Marquette, Lehigh, Navy, Army, the University of Michigan, St. Joseph’s, Drexel, Johns Hopkins, Bucknell, Cornell, Providence, Delaware, Clarkson, Franklin and Marshall, Ithaca, Salve Regina, RPI, Lebanon Valley, Colorado College, Middlebury, Hamilton, Colby, and the Merchant Marine Academy.

Coaching Staff:

Prior to arriving at Hill in 2018, head coach Mike Murphy spent the 22 prior seasons coaching at the collegiate level, including seven years as the head coach of Division I Colgate University.  An eight-year tenure as an assistant coach at Army preceded Coach Murphy’s time at Colgate.  Additionally, Coach Murphy is the defensive coordinator for the Whipsnakes organization in the Premier Lacrosse League, serving on staff during the team’s championship-winning season in 2019.

Assistant coaches Ned Ide, Chris Chirieleison ’85, Erik Mortenson, and Dave Mullen bring a wealth of experience and programmatic knowledge to the sideline.  Coach Ide succeeded the legendary Harry Price as head coach, leading the program from 2001 until 2012 and remaining on staff as an assistant since.  Coach Chirieleison was a member of Johns Hopkins University’s 1987 national championship-winning team, Coach Mortenson played collegiately at Colby College, and Coach Mullen, the team’s goalie coach, had an acclaimed career at the University of Delaware.
