Field Hockey

Field Hockey

Field hockey at The Hill School dates back to the fall of 1998, the first year of coeducation at the school. Field hockey quickly became and continues to be one of The Hill’s most dominant girl sports – in 2001, the team went undefeated and won the MAPL Championship. Since then, the team has won eleven more MAPL Championships, with its most recent title coming in 2022. In the 2022 season, the team won the PAISAA State Championship for the first time in history.
The team’s continued success can be attributed to the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the players and coaching staff alike on a daily basis. Many girls play indoor field hockey throughout the winter for some of the nation’s top-ranked club programs, allowing them to stay sharp in the offseason and compete against the best competition across the country. The Hill’s location in suburban-Philadelphia puts it in the middle of the field hockey hotbed of the United States. Because of its location, The Hill fills out an incredibly competitive schedule every year which attracts top-level talent.

The Hill is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL), featuring New Jersey field hockey rival Lawrenceville School. Our non-league schedule features numerous teams from the Philadelphia Inter-Ac league, as well as a handful of other non-league games against top teams from the Philadelphia area and New Jersey. Toward the end of the season, Hill competes in the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) State Championship Tournament. Hill fields a JV program that plays a schedule virtually identical to the Varsity schedule, allowing younger players to develop their skills and gain valuable game experience.

Since the program's inception, Hill players have gone on to compete at the Division I and Division III levels, including schools such as The University of Maryland, Duke University, Princeton University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University, University of North Carolina, Northwestern University, University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, Colgate University, Fairfield University, Northeastern University, Boston College, Lafayette College, Trinity College, Franklin and Marshall College, Ursinus College, Dickinson College, and Wellesley College. Hill field hockey players will learn to work harder than they ever had to before, coupled with learning how to be great teammates and even better people. The knowledgeable coaching staff will help improve each player's stick skills and develop her game sense that she will need to compete at the college level. Most importantly, all players learn the value of discipline and rigor while experiencing the fun and excitement of interscholastic athletics.
