Community Service

Developing empathy and offering service to others are essential components of a caring school environment committed to teaching students to serve the common good. At Hill, rather than requiring a set number of volunteer hours, we actively encourage students to give back through meaningful service embraced as part of their education. Opportunities to lead and contribute to Pottstown and our greater community are woven throughout Hill’s culture, with hopes that each student will discover and nurture a lifelong passion for selflessly connecting with others. The various components of Hill’s community service program (noted below) are facilitated by Director of Community Service Cathy Skitko P'08 '10, who also serves as Director of Communications and Community Partnerships for Hobart’s Run, Hill’s distinctive Pottstown neighborhood engagement initiative. Student club support is provided by Director of Leadership Programs B.J. Keefer. To learn more about Hill's Community Service program, please contact Cathy at cskitko@thehill.org.

Afternoon Community Service Program

As part of Hill’s daily cocurricular programming, students may apply to participate in Afternoon Community Service (ACS). This option is available each term (fall, winter, and spring); generally, students may choose ACS for as many as two terms each year, as the School requires most students to participate in athletics one term per year. However, fourth and fifth form students with demonstrated interest in volunteerism may apply to be Community Service Fellows and participate as ACS leaders all three terms. The Fellows build their leadership skills by mentoring one- and two-term ACS students and assisting with designated projects such as creating social media content highlighting the work of our neighborhood partners.

We feel it’s beneficial for students to get off campus and be exposed to real community needs while discovering and refining their individual skills and interests. We also believe that -- while there is a valuable time and place for “one-off” service projects – sustained, routine engagement provides the most tangible learning opportunities and mutually satisfying outcomes. Therefore, ACS participants spend most weekday afternoons working in small teams at thoughtfully curated Pottstown nonprofits which genuinely welcome students’ hands-on help. (On occasion, students also will serve an on-campus need such as helping staff prepare for a special campus event or writing thank you notes to exceptional staff members.)

When traveling to off-campus partners, our volunteers are transported or accompanied by ACS faculty members who work alongside them, much as athletics coaches guide their teams’ players.

Students tutor local children in afterschool programs as part of the Afternoon Community Service program.

The Hill strives to ensure that each and every student has many occasions to engage with local nonprofit missions and related community needs – and to experience humility, gratitude, and compassion while realizing the rewards that come from making an impact where one lives, and beyond. We also support students who wish to pursue additional, separate altruistic projects not included in our intentional, thoughtfully planned opportunities.
